What an AI tutor app has to do that a website does not
An AI tutor app earns its place on a home screen for three reasons: the camera is one tap away, the daily reminder arrives without you deciding to revise, and the streak is visible from the lock screen. Everything else a study tool does works fine in a browser. Skoolskill runs in any modern browser on iOS and Android with nothing to install, and on Android there is also a Google Play listing, currently in open testing.
That distinction matters when you are comparing options, because plenty of study products are a web page in a wrapper. The reason to install one is habit, not features.
How to get the Android app
- Open the Google Play listing for Skoolskill, package name com.skoolskill.app.
- Opt in to the open test from the store listing page. Google Play states that anyone can join an open testing programme and submit private feedback.
- Install it like any other app. New apps in open testing can also be found through Play search.
- Sign in with Google.
- Any Pro or Pro+ purchase goes through Google Play billing, on the same account and as the same purchase as on the web.
On iPhone, open the site in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. You get an icon, a full-screen app and working camera capture, on the same account.
Android and iPhone, side by side
Android gets an installable Play listing, currently in open testing; iPhone gets the web app on the Home Screen. The account, the decks, the streak and the class are identical on both, so the only real differences are how you install and where a purchase is billed.
| Android | iPhone | |
|---|---|---|
| How you get it | Google Play, open testing | Add to Home Screen from Safari |
| Package or address | com.skoolskill.app | skoolskill.com |
| Sign in | Sign in with Google | Same account, any sign-in method |
| Payments | Google Play billing | On the web |
| Camera scanning | Yes | Yes |
| Same decks, streaks, classes | Yes | Yes |
What a day in the app looks like
- Photograph the page your teacher covered today. Without an account the tool reads 3 pages free; with one it scans the whole stack.
- First flashcards appear in about twenty seconds, alongside practice questions and a tutor lesson written from those pages.
- Do the short session the app serves you, usually 10 to 20 minutes.
- Nova gives a hint before it gives an answer, so you finish the question yourself.
- Anything you miss enters the spaced-repetition queue and returns over the following days.
- Your streak ticks over, and the class leaderboard updates weekly if you have joined one with an invite code.
Prices across the AI study apps
Paid plans across the AI study apps run from about $4 a month to about $13. The figures below are the in-app or listed prices each product publishes itself, not estimates or averages.
| App | Listed price | Source of the figure |
|---|---|---|
| Skoolskill | Free tier, Pro about £6.99 / $6.99 a month, Pro+ about £12.99 / $12.99 | Skoolskill |
| Khanmigo for learners | $4 a month or $44 a year | Khan Academy’s own page |
| Gauth | $11.99 monthly, $99.99 annual in-app | App Store listing |
| Quizlet Plus | $9.99 and $44.99 in-app tiers | App Store listing |
Gauth’s App Store listing shows 4.8 stars from 1.5M ratings and Quizlet’s shows 4.8 from 1.1M, so these are large, mature products rather than curiosities. Khanmigo says on its own site that it never gives you the answer, which is the same philosophy Nova follows with hints before answers. Prices are taken from each product’s public pages and change; check before subscribing.
Which exam system the app fits
An install is only useful if the practice matches the paper. Set your board and level and questions come back phrased the way that system asks: GCSE and A-level across AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC, Scottish Nationals and Highers, the Irish Leaving Cert, IB, AP and SAT, HSC and ATAR in Australia, provincial exams in Canada, and CBSE class 10 and 12 in India.
School periods are handled the way schools actually run: a year, a semester or a trimester, with everything filed under the open period and last year kept and switchable. That is the difference between an app you use for one term and one you keep. If you are still comparing tools, the best AI tutor roundup puts the options side by side, and free online tutoring covers what you can actually do without paying.
What an app cannot do
- It cannot make you open it. Notifications help, but the habit is still yours.
- It cannot sit a speaking assessment with you, or coach exam anxiety.
- It cannot replace a teacher who knows your coursework brief.
- It is not a photo-to-answer machine. Nova is built to give hints first, on purpose.
- It cannot guarantee a grade. It makes 15 minutes of daily practice easy to actually do.
For what the tutor itself does, in depth, see the AI tutor page.
