What a QCE tutor actually needs to do

The Queensland Certificate of Education has a structure that rewards a very specific kind of preparation. For your ATAR, only Units 3 and 4 count — the Year 12 units — and most subjects are assessed through three internal assessments plus one external exam set and marked by the QCAA. That external exam is worth 25% of the subject (50% for maths and sciences), so one sitting carries serious weight.

Good QCE prep therefore does two things at once: keeps you ready for each internal assessment as it lands across the year, and builds exam-condition stamina for the external. Daily practice tied to the standards is how you do both.

How the QCE plan works

Phase (Year 12)FocusDaily target
Term 1 (Unit 3 start)Learn the syllabus content; first internal assessment prep15 min/day
Term 2Second internal assessment; match responses to standards descriptors15 min/day
Term 3 (Unit 4)Third internal assessment; begin external-exam-style questions15–20 min/day
Term 4 (pre-external)Timed external-exam practice; analyse/evaluate bands; error log20 min/day
External exam blockLight review under exam conditions, then rest—

Because the assessments are spread across the year, steady daily practice beats end-of-year cramming.

QCE assessment and the ATAR, briefly

Each General subject result is built from the internal and external assessments and reported out of 100. QTAC then scales those results across the state and produces your ATAR — a rank from 0 to 99.95, not a mark. The scaling means raw scores in competitive cohorts (like specialist maths) carry differently from less competitive ones, so consistent performance across Units 3 and 4 is what protects your rank. Our broader ATAR prep page explains scaling in more depth.

Where students lose marks

Skoolskill grades practice against standards-style criteria and uses spaced repetition to bring back the question types you got wrong.

Questions teachers and parents actually ask.

What is the QCE and how does it work?

The Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) is the senior school qualification in Queensland, awarded at the end of Year 12. For ATAR purposes, only Units 3 and 4 (the Year 12 units) count toward a subject result. It's administered by the QCAA, which sets the syllabuses and the external assessments.

How are QCE subjects assessed?

Most General subjects use four assessments: three internal assessments set against QCAA standards, plus one external assessment. The external exam is worth 25% of the subject for most subjects (50% for maths and science subjects). Your final subject result combines these into a grade out of 100.

How does QCE link to the ATAR?

QTAC calculates the ATAR from your best QCE subject results, scaled across the state. The ATAR is a rank from 0 to 99.95, not a mark. Your raw subject scores are scaled by how competitive each subject's cohort is, which is why strong performance across Units 3 and 4 matters most.

What is the external assessment in QCE?

The external assessment is a single, common exam set and marked by the QCAA, sat at the end of Year 12. It's worth 25% of the subject result for most General subjects and 50% for maths and sciences. Because it's one high-stakes sitting, exam-style practice under time pressure is essential.

Where do QCE students lose the most marks?

On internal assessments, students lose marks by not matching their response to the syllabus's instrument-specific standards. On the external exam, time management and the higher-order 'analyse and evaluate' bands are where marks slip. Knowing the standards descriptors is half the battle.

When should I start preparing for QCE?

Start consistent practice from the beginning of Year 12, when Units 3 and 4 begin, since these are the units that count. Internal assessments are spread across the year, so steady 15-minute daily practice keeps you ready for each one rather than cramming before the external exam.

How much does a QCE tutor cost in Queensland?

Private QCE tutoring in Queensland typically costs AU$50–$90/hour, with specialist senior-subject tutors at the top end. A year of weekly sessions for one subject can pass AU$2,000. Skoolskill is free to start or about AU$6.99/month for daily practice across all your subjects.

Does Skoolskill cover the QCAA syllabus?

Skoolskill reads the notes and syllabus material you scan in and builds practice around them, grading against standards-style criteria. It's aware of the Units 3 & 4 structure and the external exam, so practice targets what actually counts toward your subject result and ATAR.
