What Regents prep actually needs to do

New York Regents exams have two clear targets: 65 to pass and 85+ for an Advanced or Mastery diploma. They’re end-of-course exams, offered in January, June and August, and they’re built almost directly from previous years’ papers — the State releases real past exams with scoring guides, and question types repeat.

That makes Regents prep unusually answerable: practise the released exams, learn where partial credit lives on the constructed-response questions, and review the recurring topics until they’re automatic. Short daily practice on real past papers is the model that works.

How the Regents plan works

PhaseFocusDaily target
All yearKeep up with the course; the exam mirrors it—
8 weeks outTopic-by-topic review of weak units using released exams15 min/day
4 weeks outFull past-exam sections; practise shown-work for partial credit15–20 min/day
2 weeks outTimed full past papers under exam conditions; error log20 min/day
Exam weekLight review of formula sheets / reference tables, then rest—

Because so many questions recur, finishing several full released exams is worth more than re-reading notes.

The exams and the diploma thresholds

For a standard Regents Diploma, students typically pass five exams at 65+: one math, one science, ELA, US History & Government, and Global History & Geography. An Advanced Regents Diploma adds Geometry and Algebra II, a second science, and a world-language assessment. Hitting 85+ across the relevant exams earns the Honors or Mastery designations. Knowing which threshold you’re aiming for shapes how hard you push past a simple pass.

Where students lose marks

Skoolskill grades practice against Regents-style scoring guides and uses spaced repetition to bring back the question types you missed.

Questions teachers and parents actually ask.

What are the Regents exams?

The Regents are standardized end-of-course exams in New York State, administered three times a year (January, June and August). Students sit them in subjects like Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Living Environment, Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics, ELA, US History & Government, and Global History & Geography.

What score do you need to pass a Regents exam?

A scaled score of 65 is the standard passing mark. A 65 in the required exams counts toward a Regents Diploma. Scoring 85 or above in the relevant exams earns an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors or Mastery designation, which is why many students aim well past 65.

How many Regents exams do I need to graduate?

For a standard Regents Diploma, students generally need to pass five exams: one math, one science, one English (ELA), and two social studies (US History and Global History), each at 65 or above. An Advanced Regents Diploma requires additional math and science exams plus a language assessment.

Are Regents exams based on past papers?

Yes — heavily. New York releases past Regents exams with answer keys and scoring guides, and question styles repeat year to year. Practising real released exams is the single most effective Regents prep strategy, because the format and recurring question types are so consistent.

Where do students lose the most marks on Regents exams?

On math Regents, the multi-step constructed-response questions (Parts II–IV) cost the most marks because partial credit depends on shown work. On Living Environment, the lab and data-interpretation questions trip students up. On ELA and history, the source-based essays reward structure and evidence over content alone.

When should I start studying for a Regents exam?

Since Regents exams are end-of-course tests, the content builds all year — but focused review should start 6–8 weeks before the June (or January) administration. Fifteen minutes of daily past-paper practice across those weeks beats a single weekend cram before the exam.

How much does Regents tutoring cost in New York?

Private Regents tutoring in New York typically costs $50–$100/hour, with NYC rates at the higher end. A few months of weekly sessions for one subject can pass $1,500. Skoolskill is free to start or about $6.99/month for daily practice across every Regents subject you're sitting.

Can I retake a Regents exam?

Yes. Regents exams are offered in January, June and August, so a student who doesn't reach 65 — or who wants to push past 85 for an Advanced Diploma — can retake in a later administration. Targeted practice on the specific question types you missed is the fastest way to lift the score.
