What the Digital SAT actually looks like

The SAT is no longer the long paper test your older siblings took. It’s fully digital, taken in the College Board’s Bluebook app, and it’s section-adaptive — the test adjusts to you as you go. The whole thing runs about 2 hours and 14 minutes, and there’s no penalty for guessing, so you answer every single question.

Here’s the structure:

That’s 98 questions in roughly two hours and fifteen minutes.

How the SAT is scored: 400 to 1600

Each of the two sections is scored on a 200–800 scale. Add them together and you get your total, somewhere from 400 to 1600. A 1600 is a perfect score.

Because the test is section-adaptive, the first module of each section decides the difficulty of the second. Do well on the first Math module and you unlock a harder second module that can reach the top of the scale; struggle, and the second module caps your ceiling. The early questions carry extra weight — which is exactly why steady, confident practice pays off.

Superscoring: why most students test more than once

Many colleges superscore the SAT. That means they take your best Reading & Writing score from one test date and your best Math score from another, and combine them into a new, higher total.

Practically, this means each section only has to peak once. A student who scores 700 Math / 640 R&W in March and 660 Math / 710 R&W in May gets a superscore of 700 + 710 = 1410, higher than either single sitting. That’s why testing two or three times — with focused practice between — is a smart strategy.

How daily SAT prep compounds

A good plan, starting about 3–4 months out:

Months 3–4 out (15 min/day, 5 days/week)

Months 2–1 out (20–25 min/day)

Final 3 weeks

Skoolskill’s planner does this automatically once you set your test date, adjusting daily prompts as the SAT approaches.

SAT subjects, broken down

Reading & Writing tests: reading comprehension, command of evidence, words in context, text structure, transitions, grammar and punctuation, and rhetorical synthesis — all as short passages with one question each.

Math covers: algebra, advanced math (functions, nonlinear equations), problem-solving and data analysis (ratios, percentages, statistics), and geometry and trigonometry. A calculator is allowed throughout, with Desmos built in.

Skoolskill drills each of these as its own topic, so your weakest area gets the most reps.

Questions teachers and parents actually ask.

Is the SAT really all digital now?

Yes. The SAT is fully digital and section-adaptive, taken on the Bluebook app on a laptop or tablet. The total test runs about 2 hours and 14 minutes — much shorter than the old paper SAT — and there's no penalty for guessing, so you should answer every question.

What are the sections and how is it scored?

Two sections: Reading & Writing and Math. Each is split into two modules. There are 98 questions total — 54 in Reading & Writing and 44 in Math. Each section scores 200–800, and your total is the sum, from 400 to 1600. A 1600 is perfect.

What does 'section-adaptive' mean for me?

Each section has two modules. How you do on the first module decides whether the second module is harder or easier. Doing well early unlocks the harder, higher-scoring second module — so the opening questions matter. Skoolskill's adaptive practice mirrors this so test day feels familiar.

Can I use a calculator on the SAT?

Yes — a calculator is allowed for the entire Math section, and the Bluebook app has the Desmos graphing calculator built in. We still practice the mental-math and estimation skills that save you time, since reaching for the calculator on every question slows you down.

What is superscoring and does it matter?

Superscoring means a college takes your highest Reading & Writing score and your highest Math score across different test dates and combines them. Many colleges superscore the SAT, which is why taking it two or three times can help — you only need each section to peak once. Our planner is built around improving across attempts.

When should I start studying for the SAT?

Most students test in spring of junior year or fall of senior year, so starting 3–4 months out — often the fall of junior year — is ideal. Fifteen to twenty minutes a day from then on beats a frantic two weeks. The daily habit is what actually moves the score.

How does this compare to a Kaplan or Princeton Review course?

Big test-prep courses cost roughly $1,000–$2,500, and private SAT tutors run $40–$100/hour. Skoolskill is free to start and about $7.99/month for Pro. You still get real practice questions, full-length adaptive tests, and feedback — for a fraction of the cost.
