What TOEFL preparation actually needs to do

The TOEFL iBT is an academic-English test used for university admission, especially in the US, scored 0–120 across four sections — Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing — each worth 0–30. Since the July 2023 update the whole test runs under two hours, and it’s taken entirely on a computer, including a Speaking section you record into a microphone.

Good TOEFL prep is balanced and practical. Universities set their own cutoffs (often 80–100 total, sometimes with section minimums), so a single weak section can sink an otherwise strong score. The test’s signature integrated tasks — read, listen, then speak or write about how the sources connect — reward note-taking and synthesis you build by doing them repeatedly. Skoolskill is an AI tutor that turns your own practice and notes into daily 15–20 minute drills with feedback.

The four sum to a total of 0–120.

Why note-taking is a TOEFL skill in itself

A detail many candidates miss: you can take notes on every section of the TOEFL, and the integrated tasks practically demand it. In integrated Writing you read a passage, then hear a lecture that usually challenges it, then write about how they relate — and the lecture plays only once. Strong note-taking that captures the lecture’s counterpoints opposite the reading’s points is often what separates a 24 from a 28 on Writing. The same goes for the integrated Speaking tasks, where a clean two-column note lets you respond in a structured 60 seconds. Skoolskill drills these source-to-response tasks so the synthesis becomes a habit, not a scramble.

When a human tutor still matters

Many candidates pair a few human sessions with daily AI practice across all four sections.

Questions teachers and parents actually ask.

What are the four TOEFL iBT sections?

The TOEFL iBT has four sections — Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing — taken in that order on a computer. Since the July 2023 update the whole test runs under two hours. Each section is scored 0–30, and the four combine into a total from 0 to 120.

How is the TOEFL scored?

Each section — Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing — is scored 0–30, and your total is their sum, from 0 to 120. There's no fixed pass mark; universities set their own. Many ask for around 80–100 total, and competitive programs often want 100+, sometimes with section minimums.

How is the TOEFL different from IELTS?

Both test academic English, but TOEFL iBT is fully computer-based with a 0–120 score and an integrated speaking section you record into a microphone, while IELTS offers a face-to-face speaking interview and uses a 0–9 band scale. TOEFL is accepted by most US universities; check which your target schools prefer.

What are TOEFL integrated tasks?

TOEFL is known for integrated tasks that combine skills: in Writing, you read a passage, hear a lecture, then write about how they relate; in Speaking, you read and listen before responding. These reward note-taking and synthesis, which Skoolskill drills by giving you source material and feedback on how completely you connect the ideas.

Can AI grade my TOEFL speaking and writing?

Skoolskill gives feedback on your Writing against delivery, development and organization, and helps you practise Speaking responses for fluency and structure. It's strong on whether you fully answered the task and organized clearly; a human still judges pronunciation and natural intonation best, so use both near test day.

How long does it take to improve a TOEFL score?

Raising your total by 10–20 points typically takes 1–3 months of consistent practice, longer at the higher end. Daily 15–20 minute practice across all four sections — especially the speaking and writing tasks people skip — moves the score more than occasional long cram sessions.

Which TOEFL section do students struggle with most?

Speaking and Writing trip up the most candidates, because they require producing English under time pressure, not just recognizing it. Many lose points in Speaking from running out of time or thin development, and in Writing from not fully addressing integrated tasks. These are exactly where daily practice with feedback helps most.
